<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Here's a quick tutorial for this sweet little playmat. I designed it with a pocket to hold the dress up outfits and ties so it can be rolled up nice and neat. I thought it would be great for my littles to use as church/car toy or even as a placemat when eating a snack in the car. Of course, I'll make extras to sell in my Etsy Shop, <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/SandyFriesner" target="_blank">Down South Designs</a>. </div>

Cut two 2 1/2" strips and two 5 1/2" x 6 1/2" squares from the black heart fabric. Sew the two squares right sides together along side, top, side. Turn inside out and iron. Prepare the clothes by ironing fusible fleece to back side of playground clothes fabric. Using sharp scissors, cut out each one. If you iron on cotton setting, these clothes should hold up well to little hands! The fleece backing really helps the outfits cling to the playground fabric. </div>

I've been trying to get a handle on my mountain of scraps. After tiring of cutting them into strips and squares, I had a different idea. I ironed Transweb fusible onto them and drew out template shapes on paper side. I cut and collected quite a few for creative playtime. </div>

I thought mixing up the thread colors added a bit of interest too! I used lots of low volume text prints on front and back. The little lady is quite the avid reader now and I know she will enjoy learning new words looking at her pretty pillow. </div>

Lots of works in progress in my sewing studio this week! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
Here's a fun quilt top that a customer asked me to quilt in an authentic style of the 30's era. This hand pieced quilt top had been passed down through her family and she wanted to have it completed as a wedding gift for a family member. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The maker of this quilt top was so careful with her scraps and pieced them so well that you had to look closely to see which fans were "made do" from pieces of fabrics. </div>
<br />

<div>
<br /></div>

I felt like I was on a treasure hunt when I examined her work and the lovely old fabrics. Such a joy! She was an excellent quilter and obviously took pride in her work and was quite thrifty with her fabric scraps!</div>

My friend, J, and I have been trying to get our improv groove on and make these memory clothing blocks. It's a project that my church group of sewists at the Mustard Seed is doing for a local family who recently lost a loved one. </div>

I've made lots of skirts and bags from old quilt tops. I've even repaired some old torn quilts and restored them back to their former glory. I could tell these deteriorated quilts were near and dear to her heart as she told me that her sweet Aunt had made these back in the 1930s. She cherished them and was so disappointed that other generations of her family had not treated them well. One of the quilts even had cigarette burns all over it. <br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjgBRHOdOCHvcNumrk8BluMikwLWfpsM9BLbNEm7w3nSUhfyOxHf3a89uE_SiUrJgmjCcYVwj6oiV3-cPu-v0zl-0F4S7-iNziqdwaT9Kh7tFbd66VNxlEazDPCG_YQP28UhkPvk0MRfM/s1600/IMG_7300%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjgBRHOdOCHvcNumrk8BluMikwLWfpsM9BLbNEm7w3nSUhfyOxHf3a89uE_SiUrJgmjCcYVwj6oiV3-cPu-v0zl-0F4S7-iNziqdwaT9Kh7tFbd66VNxlEazDPCG_YQP28UhkPvk0MRfM/s1600/IMG_7300%5B1%5D.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I salvaged some star blocks from one quilt and decided to try making a few pillows. As you can see, these old quilts were stuffed full with carded cotton batting from the good old days. I'm glad we have better batting choices these days! <br />
<br />

<br />
These were very thick to sew through but my Bernina 750QE handled it like a champ! After sewing the initial seam, I used the extra wide zigzag stitch to secure the seam allowance neatly. Love that option to adjust the width of any stitch up to 7 mm wide!<br />

I thought a square pillow would be a bit boring so I trimmed them like a hexagon and sewed them up. It surprised me when they came out looking like a flower after I stuffed them! If I can come up with a few clever ways to cover up the burn spots, I might just whip up a few of these for my dear old friend. I think she might like to give them to her great grandchildren just to keep them in the family. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I made the one hour trip to my favorite quilt shop, Lola Pink in Lafayette, LA, and fell in love three steps into the shop. The new fabric line, Persimmon by Moda, just reached out to me and I knew that jelly roll had to come home with me. Now I'm usually not a jelly roll kind of gal. I don't know if it's the price or the perfectly coordinated formula, but something usually makes me steer clear of them. Anyhow, the colors made me take the leap into jellyrolls and I'm glad I did! I also selected an unModa step child fabric that I adored for border potential. I made sixteen patch blocks--sooo easy with jelly rolls. I just separated the strips into darks and lights. I loved interchanging the medium fabrics as they can become either a dark or a light depending upon which fabric it is combined with. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivhPyZwv3iqWANhu6Dv6Dm2D7fRyLfE6G1yS-VQ8Q1h750M_0XkL0iGb4nTf3sbWrkqPeYCUTOXOquu6SpMEumB4Ad5jMtfKr9Nrb7AKtHGFz4B-aZ189cgO89E0pVyNryZmp1IcEChvQ/s640/blogger-image-242331691.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf0SpQk9mFXob9tZdMHJXlnsoFi_t0yvRgh-dmibUhYosL0jUVK-9FsagcxFt_ifeH9Loda0xvquF97XePHC3ECS_YIv-LBxtdm51g7IXNIeLf9hnKikMr5HnfO3hD4RaAFeBJeQrkbSE/s640/blogger-image-808196550.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf0SpQk9mFXob9tZdMHJXlnsoFi_t0yvRgh-dmibUhYosL0jUVK-9FsagcxFt_ifeH9Loda0xvquF97XePHC3ECS_YIv-LBxtdm51g7IXNIeLf9hnKikMr5HnfO3hD4RaAFeBJeQrkbSE/s640/blogger-image-808196550.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I planned a loose,comfy feel for the quilt so I assumed that meant loosely spaced quilting design. I chose a wave quilting line through each block but it didn't seem like enough. Then I added a simple seed line design at the connection seam of each column of blocks. It still looked awkward.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq2SMLELAQUmGQQ43Ls-ot09jGpN2j6MLgilDniDVKIwb78C2D19L3uK0EGit3FWjWzV_0y4qMV51oiJ8yIY1qhs8-aPzpsQNLi5oEBdP9-SiGosYaJYOvLqU9GXXZ4Wv1Jat-R1QteFU/s640/blogger-image-371753872.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq2SMLELAQUmGQQ43Ls-ot09jGpN2j6MLgilDniDVKIwb78C2D19L3uK0EGit3FWjWzV_0y4qMV51oiJ8yIY1qhs8-aPzpsQNLi5oEBdP9-SiGosYaJYOvLqU9GXXZ4Wv1Jat-R1QteFU/s640/blogger-image-371753872.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Even after unstitching and restitching, it didn't look "right enough'". My excellent quilter friend, Gayle, encouraged me to just add more stitches until it feels right. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRscqVbWeg2JAbXEXz6WrtgPXRjACqn49lzIlfcE8eLYc-FY2sh5JIJKdtzsuffZ0ymIU16mF9QSPDc-Wc4QVbLUvEWbRw3wmNwA71nzkP1gHZ9rJMHfcBsCKr_94HmoKuMLA0hPi0c8E/s640/blogger-image-2012144792.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRscqVbWeg2JAbXEXz6WrtgPXRjACqn49lzIlfcE8eLYc-FY2sh5JIJKdtzsuffZ0ymIU16mF9QSPDc-Wc4QVbLUvEWbRw3wmNwA71nzkP1gHZ9rJMHfcBsCKr_94HmoKuMLA0hPi0c8E/s640/blogger-image-2012144792.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Then in the middle of my quilting mojo, my machine gives me this message. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAL4krOm0G12YyReh_8K5-IuRIzQAchMrfijGSXEX86rn4US2zlxdUVQySe1wZKs_n6gVoST8xQwfL2_DMNZK4JLATktjdyko3FfiK06oCxojvf54dujNCCkhLfdU8yDFKncS7WfTn4jY/s640/blogger-image--510303393.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAL4krOm0G12YyReh_8K5-IuRIzQAchMrfijGSXEX86rn4US2zlxdUVQySe1wZKs_n6gVoST8xQwfL2_DMNZK4JLATktjdyko3FfiK06oCxojvf54dujNCCkhLfdU8yDFKncS7WfTn4jY/s640/blogger-image--510303393.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
What the heck???? I am in free motion mode with feed dogs down so why is my Bernina 750QE doing this crazy talk and locking up? I finally figured it out and made a blog post for my <a href="http://madedownsouth.blogspot.com/2014/10/learning-to-love-my-bernina-not-always.html" target="_blank">Loving my bernina series</a> to help other owners of the persnickety Bernina 750QE. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZTV5jv_wlLh2FND5R_C-JgtqXehHTwlgeQIGu8d5Oo2CFmXgWipN0l0erkqcexIhx2OMAhRhxD1UEvCJi9REESXv1XO4OCnRYDqS5z7vII05hQ9WWuhBJbw4HAhw6p062XMfRVFUue4U/s640/blogger-image--1394651930.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZTV5jv_wlLh2FND5R_C-JgtqXehHTwlgeQIGu8d5Oo2CFmXgWipN0l0erkqcexIhx2OMAhRhxD1UEvCJi9REESXv1XO4OCnRYDqS5z7vII05hQ9WWuhBJbw4HAhw6p062XMfRVFUue4U/s640/blogger-image--1394651930.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
So I finally reaching the point of enough and it's amazing what the right amount of stitching can do for a quilt. I love the feel and texture of the quilt now. I am selecting binding fabrics now. I'm kinda leaning toward a dark blue binding.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

I've already got the feed dogs down so the message above makes no sense at all. Nevertheless, I obediently go through the motions to raise and lower the feed dogs again. I begin stitching again and it chokes again.... and here's the message I've seen many times before. </div>

<span style="text-align: start;">I used to think it meant the gears were literally stuck (duh!) but I eventually found that it was just an indicator of a huge lint booger in the gear mechanism in the bobbin case area. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, after a quick swipe of my paintbrush in the depths of the bobbin area, I got back to work. I need to remember that what my Bernina communicates is always subject to interpretation. The past year + of ups and downs with this persnickety Princess has given me valuable experience in learning to interpret what my machine <u>really</u> needs. I have to give a tip of the hat to my Bernina dealer, Lola Pink of Lafayette, LA. The owner, Jennifer, has helped me tremendously and I'm impressed that she knew enough to know when it was time to have my machine sent back to the factory for additional work. But, an essential lesson to remember with my machine is that my darling Bernina is very particular about oiling. Actually the word should be <b>needy</b>.....she <b>needs </b>a lot of Bernina oil on a regular basis to perform at her optimum. She is capable of so much.....who can deny her an ample amount of oil?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I finished my Persimmon Jelly Roll Quilt with a coordinating binding by machine. I used the Bernina 1D foot with the dual feed foot engaged to add the binding edge on the back side of the quilt. Then I ironed back binding over to the front side. Once I pinned it all in place (a total pain, but worth it!) then it was time to stitch the binding in place with my Bernina 10D foot engaged with the dual feed foot. I'm sure that is probably not the "proper" foot to use, but it worked for me by moving my needle over to the right a few spaces. The foot's bottom flange along with my stiletto helped me guide everything in proper place! I've never had a machine applied binding look so great. I think it could even hold its own in a quilt show competition. And it's so much quicker than binding by hand! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now here's a tip for a special trick to set that bobbin back just right after you've removed the honking big lint ball. The Bernina engineers designed a magnet on the bobbin case to help the consumer. There's a little click sound that let's you know when it's found its happy place. But there are 2 totally different clicks to deal with in the delicate setting of this bobbin case. As the bobbin case settles into place, there is a significant click sound and snug fit as you fiddle it into its special magnetized placement. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="text-align: center;">If it is the correct placement, the outer casing(the silver half moon shape in the photo below) will close properly. If it does not feel right as you close the outer casing ring, just start again. I find that the magnet engages in a couple of different positions during the rotation, but the cover will not actually close unless it is set perfectly. </span></div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Made a baby quilt from scraps for DH's coworker. I started out with one vision and had to keep adjusting it based on the limited amount of fabric scraps. It was surprisingly fun to improvise and I really like the end result! <br />

</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
I tried a pieced back but realized too late that I didn't lay it out straight! Must remember to check for this next time. And will try to remember to keep my toes out of the photo ...</div>

<div>
...and lots more pondering... I've come to realize that having a design wall in my sewing room can be a blessing and a curse!<br />
<br />
Lastly, I've made it to my first goal for my handstitched Steampunk Quilt project. One dozen blocks completed and many more dozens to go! These blocks were a bit challenging to piece but they are getting easier as I gain a rhythm with this type of work. Still, I'm glad that I'm not under a timeline deadline for these little jewels. Kudos to Jen Kingwell for designing the pattern!</div>

I<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">'m in a Patsy Cline type of groove as I hum her "Walkin After Midnight" tune while stitching on my Aqua Stars quilt. This Bernina walking foot is awesome. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I never realized how much better my ditch stitching would be with this closed toe foot. Once I trained myself to stop looking at the needle, everything got so much easier! I just line up the seam on that middle mark on the foot and it's magic. The needle just sinks right into the fold and the stitch practically disappears. No more wavering back and forth from one side of the seam to the other. Yahooooo!! Yes, I'm beyond thrilled because my past stitch in the ditch experiences were awful as well as stressful. </div>

Here's my trick for keeping my project from pleating at cross seams. I bunch up the quilt a lot to ease in any fullness that might creep up on me at the cross seams. It works really well for me!<br />

It's been an up and down experience to say the least. Since I am still sane, I feel the need to document this journey and share my discoveries with other owners of this persnickety Princess. I entered this relationship with a strong desire to utilize the machine for piecing quilts, machine applique and machine quilting with the BSR for free motion quilting. Not the least bit interested in the embroidery options for now, even though that is a fantastic perk. I was accustomed to piecing quilts on my two Janomes, which, I have come to realize, were true workhorses. No muss, no fuss, they performed when asked with no whining and no tantrums. The Princess was not so amiable but I finally figured out her mood swings. I sew just about every single day since I am an avid quilter and have an active Etsy shop which I will shamelessly promote here....Down South Designs. Hey, just keeping it real. Anywho, I need my machine to dependably work at my beck and call. <br />
<br />
Discovery #1 She gets very cranky when asked to switch from quilting mode to piecing mode. Actually, any change in function seems to put her in a bit of a tizzy. My solution is to rethread and give her insides a quick swab with a q tip. Just an itty bit of dust and debris can upset her delicate system. Always, always offer her a sip of Bernina Oil to refresh her. I find that any little bit of lubrication helps with the transition mode. Sometimes, it amazes me how thirsty she is!! I just keeping dropping in the oil drops until it floats on the surface for a just a second before suctioning down the opening. 7-9 drops is not unusual. But here's the catch. She spits back up some oil in the next 20 stitches or so! Be sure to stitch on a test sample and learn from my mistakes!<br />
<br />
Discovery #2 No walking foot needed = incredibly bad stitches without the Dual Feed attachment engaged. I honestly don't know why, but that's the truth! I've noticed it more on the straight stitch but there is a difference in quality of special stitches as well. So what? At least there is an easy answer to this problem! Just pull down the dual feed and engage. It certainly doesn't get in the way or obstruct my view. <br />
<br />
Discovery #3 There is a hiding spot for lint balls. We all know they obvious spots to clean out the lint monsters that can weave themselves into substantial mass while we are happily stitching away. After cleaning the feed dogs and nooks and crannies under the stitch plate, take a look down below in the bobbin area, I usually see a small lint build up in the bobbin case area, but it's worth cleaning the case surround area anyway since she is so delicately balanced. Take the time to remove the metal bobbin case and peer into the mechanism that turns the bobbin case. That is always the answer to continuing thread problems for my machine. When nothing else has worked, I check this little spot and always find a furr ball, or, rather, a lint ball, caught behind the mechanism. I have to use a stilletto or fine sharp pointed tweezers to remove the little booger! I hope this pic helps you to<br />
locate the exact spot. <br />

I'm inspired now! Finishing the last bit of binding on my great niece's PINK quilt. I combined pink with black, white, gray and a dash of orange. The reverse side is improv pieced from scraps and stash. I'm hoping for double duty for this quilt. Using front for her preteen years and the hip improv back side for her teenage years. We'll see if all goes as planned!<br />

Two were from brides facing a quick deadline, so I really had to kick it in gear. Here is pic of the "Dollar Dance Bag" which I always love to make even though sewing burlap is messy! I also turned out 8 bridal clutch purses in 1 day, new record!! The 3rd order was for an finished item in stock, so I was relieved to see that! I'm also working on the final decorative quilting for a bride's wedding quilt. She sent me her dress and wedding party stuff which I promptly cut into little pieces. Yikes! It's turning out well but I will think carefully before committing to working with satin again. That fabric is a challenge to say the least!</div>

Here's my quilt entry in the Small Quilt category. It's 42' x 54", all cotton, and machine stitched on Bernina 750QE. <br />

It's symbolic to me of all of the big corporate organizations, like American Red Cross and Salvation Army, that come through during disastrous events to help those in need. I chose to use a few scrappy cross blocks to remind me that those mega corporations, while not perfect, can provide the essential structure and guidance needed in time of catastrophe to help those scraps of community volunteers work effectively. I experienced both sides when 2 deadly hurricanes hit Louisiana in 2005. My local community and church hosted and cared for hundreds who had evacuated New Orleans in the first hurricane named Katrina. A few weeks later, a double whammy. The mega Hurricane Rita headed our way and devastated my hometown and many others in the southwest corner of Louisiana. My family evacuated and we ended up in Tennessee. I couldn't believe there were help centers set up there in the Smoky Mountain area for LA hurricane refugees. Instead of us helping someone in need, we were being served. It was humbling yet so reassuring. It won't surprise you that I even met quilters there and was invited to many enjoyable sessions of quilting on an old fashioned frame with like-minded women. It was a healing time. And now you know why I put hand stitching on those crosses.<br />

But, nooooooo, I drag out this phase and tend to delay it as long as possible. Hence, torture followed by pure joy. So I am setting myself a goal for my beloved Red Cross quilt. I want to enter it in Blogger's Quilt Festival at Amy's Creative Side. My deadline is May 16th and the size is only 40ish x 50ish so I think I can do this. I will do this. I will do this. <br>
<br>
I really don't care for the way my machine quilting turned out. Despite many needle changes, all the stitches look wonky on these white on white background fabrics. Kinda like the needle left a hole punched through the fabric. The quilting lines are not even close to straight but I like to think that lends to the charm of the quilt. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it) My absolute favorite part of the quilt is the hand stitching in the red crosses. I used embroidery floss and big stitches to give it substantial texture. <br>
<br>
I have a nice little backstory about this quilt which I will share in the post for the actual quilt entry. Until then, happy stitching! <br>

It's strange how inspiration strikes. I was recently reminded of my children's toddler days and our experiences with "time out". It wasn't always easy to find the perfect time out location where you could supervise the little prisoner. If only I had one of these back then, I could have tossed down the quilt in a convenient spot and ordered them to sit in time out for a couple of minutes. X marks the spot. Stay on the X. Now who wouldn't understand that? HA! <br />

I designed this by using a basic 9 patch block set on point. I used solid gray and solid buttery yellow for this 40" square quilt. I jazzed it up with a bold polka dot on back and soft aqua stripe on the binding. I love how this one block quilt turned out and plan to try it in other color combinations. <br />

Having more fun with baby quilts featuring<br />

simple layouts and high quality fabrics. I found these color gradation fabrics at a Texas quilt shop. I fell in love with the bolts of many colors but limited myself to choosing 5 colors. I purchased 1/4 yard of red, purple, aqua, hot pink and leafy green. Each 9" X 44" strip of fabric color had the same gradual transition from dark to light. I matched each strip carefully together at the seamline to try to maintain the look horizontally and vertically.</div>
<div>
I found the styled leaf fabric at Hancock Fabrics. The black background behind the pink, green and aqua leaves inspired me to use black binding on the quilt. It measures 32" X 42" and I think it will work well as a mod baby quilt or as a wall hanging!</div>

Trying out a new series of baby quilts and having lots of fun with different fabrics on my design wall in my new sewing room. I'm loving using geometric and solid fabrics available in current color options. I'm experimenting with abstract modern style for all those mod baby nurseries.<br />

I decided to step outside of the box and try a cool look for the back of the quilt. I just loved those bright colors on the dark brown background.<br />

<span style="color: black;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: black;">We accidentally on purpose ordered one too many cabinet doors on our recent home construction project. This long skinny one was put on the short list and got booted to the garage pretty quick. Every time I saw it, I kept thinking there had to be something good I could do with it. So, I turned it from a cabinet door into a functional and beautiful hanger display.</span><br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Inspiration struck when I started playing around with stencils painting my front door <a href="http://madedownsouth.blogspot.com/2012/10/white-on-white-stenciled-front-door.html" target="_blank">here</a> with flat and gloss combinations. I knew I would use a smaller design stencil to coordinate well with the small open face frame of the cabinet door. Wasn't sure about the best color combination until I came across these beautiful knobs at Hobby Lobby (half price sale of course!) So, black & white it would be.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4fX1Me_S4Kafqeq3sEQsaO3Xd2S-iCq-AjswTs1USvOaDT_3sqF8q2Ws8v8d8MeQjXO6Ckqk8NIC6sLyA8N2tHDu9FlvjQLyY3IGBdhkuNR0d7c46dnoj_YRHV0lPUbZ0xoWLEy6vSlI/s1600/111_0571.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4fX1Me_S4Kafqeq3sEQsaO3Xd2S-iCq-AjswTs1USvOaDT_3sqF8q2Ws8v8d8MeQjXO6Ckqk8NIC6sLyA8N2tHDu9FlvjQLyY3IGBdhkuNR0d7c46dnoj_YRHV0lPUbZ0xoWLEy6vSlI/s640/111_0571.JPG" width="474" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The only problem with these HL knobs is that they usually are designed to screw into a nut rather than screwing into the knob itself. When you use a counter sink drill bit, the screw & nut both lay inside the recessed area and lay flush to the back side like this: <br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
If you don't have access to equipment to recess a screw hole in back of your board, just select your knobs carefully so your board will lay flat against the wall. <br />

<br />
I went shopping with those helpful people at Lowe's to find a little metal tube to set the knob into so it would project out from the surface a bit. I have no idea what this little thing is called but I know it works. It had a bright metal finish and I just spray painted it black. It now has enough depth to hold a robe or a towel easily. The total investment was less than $20 and I love the transformation!<br />

I used vintage fabrics, lace and trims as well as a stash of ammo bags found by my favorite goodwill hunter.<br />

Now for the fun flowers that can be used as pins, hairclips or pillow/bag decorations.<br />
Old gunny sack for this raggedy flower.<br />
Nice white burlap for the next flower. Then couldn't decide between frayed edge or selvage edge on the osnaburg fabric, so I made both. Then I rummaged through old floral calicos and even soft old bed sheets to create more flowers. A few unique laces made the cut and created even more flowers.<br />

Loving the button effect. That glitz one is a modern button I picked up in jewelry section at Michael's.<br />

I like the ability to change out fabrics in my home decor. The drop zone area of our mud room needed some prettying up so why not design a back board you can change with the seasons? Besides that, I'm trying to justify buying this gorgeous fabric.<br />

I used a thick foam insulation board used in construction. It's sold in 5 X 8 ft.lengths at Lowes and Home Depot. I prefer using this because it's cheap and can be used as bulletin board too. I measured my opening and cut the board at a bevel to fit snugly in the area.<br />

Just starched my fabric well and wrapped it around the board, securing it with duct tape on the back side. It will be easy to change my fabric whenever I want. For access, you could attach a tiny ribbon loop in the corner to help pull away the board from the wall.</div>

<b><br /></b>
<b>Another checkoff on the TO DO List: Redo the shadowbox frames bought for $1 at garage sale. </b><br />
<br />
Not $1 each---all 4 for one buck. What a deal even if one of the glass inserts is missing. I didn't need the glass for what I was planning! <br />
<br />
I had been lusting this upholstery fabric at Hobby Lobby for a while and got 1/2 yard for $10ish with my coupon discount. Then I decided placement and cut away. I simply wrapped the fabric around the backboard and hot glued it to the back side.<br />

Tried my little art project on the wall and added<br />
in a few doodahs for interest. Made the scaredy<br />
cat in my pottery group and sewed the frayed<br />
edge flowers with all my many scraps. Decided<br />
the character marks on frame edges would not<br />
work so I repainted with black semi-gloss for a<br />
more polished look.<br />

Love the turquoise color popping up in the decorating blogs so I decided to experiment with one of my $3 sale pumpkins. I spray painted with Larkspur Blue and prepared for a voila! moment...but, actually, it looked a bit much. I was in full scale "rescue my project" mode and so I forgot to take photo of the plain blue painted pumpkin. Anyway, I tried toning down its brightness by applying some dark walnut gel stain. Then I just wiped it back off quickly before it dried.<br />
<br />

<br />
Looked great until it rolled off its drying mount and got a few character marks. But I kinda liked that orange showing through where the paint rubbed off. So, I used my very fine sandpaper to give it even more character all over that punkin. I love happy accidents! Now she's the prettiest punkin in the patch :)<br />

Set up a little vignette on my front porch using flowers, burlap and some old junk. Recently rediscovered this old market cart long forgotten in our attic. Another house moving find was the crusty old watering can I used 20 or so years ago! Gotta love all that rust and character!<br />
